1. WHY CHOOSE FLOWS SUMMER LAB FAVARA?

There are many reasons why attend the FLOWS Summer Lab in Favara. It is a unique opportunity for learning how design can stimulate, educate and reawaken the common public consciousness on the issue of water. The workshop will offer the chance of experiencing a craft-studio environment, where critical thinking and ideas will travel from paper and digital to a real constructed object. Student will realize, submit and then place their final project in an urban context where citizens and visitors will engage with it. 

2. WORKSHOP PROGRAMME

What is the course structure?

Students will work in groups of five, mixed between different provenance schools and countries. The workshop will take place in the Urban Centre of Favara (10 km from the city of Agrigento in Sicily), which will be freely accessible for the entire day. Students  will be expected to work from 10:00 to 18:00 although during the final stages these hours may be adjusted to meet deadlines. Every student is expected to bring its own laptop computer, sketchbooks, and other drawing tools. Students will be responsible for arranging their own travel to the workshop venue from their respective schools. The workshop will be held in English.

• What kind of excursions will be organized?

Excursions will provide all the participants with a a glimpse of the art and architecture history of the region (Ancient Greek sites and Sicilian baroque) plus a remarkable visit to a contemporary art installation in Gibellina by Alberto Burri.

• What are the Rules of Study?

Study at the FLOWS Summer Lab is mainly team-conducted. This means that the emphasis in not placed on the work or research made by the single person but on the final product as a result of a group work. The workshop is open to students in Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape Design, Building Engineering, Spatial Sociology, Geography, Politics and to young professionals from all EU and non EU countries interested in the topic of water.

• What is a motivation letter?

A motivation letter is simply a written letter to the Workshop organizers why you want to study at the Flows Summer Lab, your personal motivations and your expectations of the course and what you will get out of it. The format is similar to a cover letter that accompanies your CV when applying for a job.

• What do I need to show in the portfolio?

The portfolio should demonstrate the type of work or projects you have done in the past years. The purpose of the portfolio is to allow the tutors to get an idea of your skills for you to show that you are capable of undertaking this programme.

4. GENERAL INFO

• How do I reach Favara?

Agrigento is the closest big town to favor, but doesn’t have any airport of its own and is reachable from two airports. The closest airport is Falcone and Borsellino in Palermo, the other airport Fontanarossa in Catania. We suggest to land in Catania for much better bus connections. Bus services operate from Agrigento to Catania airport every 1,5hrs. From the center of Agrigento you reach Favara with private transportations provided by organizers. You’ll get to your destination in about 2,5 hours on average.  

• How will students be living in Favara?

Students will be accommodated in BnB’s structures situated in the town centre. A special agreement has been done with the owners of those places by organizers, so there will be no need of reservation by the participants. Visit Belmonte, Casa Natia, Iesuite di via Veneto. The average daily rent with Internet access  is ≈ 25€/ person. The workshop venue is in a short walking distance from accommodations, as well are supermarkets. Favara is a small town and most of the touristic attractions can be reached by walking. Most of the cultural activities are around Farm Cultural Park, an international cultural center of Favara. 

• What are the normal living costs in Favara?

Favara is a cheap city, much cheaper than many other Italian or European cities and there are plenty of reasonably priced and low-cost alternatives for students. Food is amazing and cheap, there is a great local market for food. Eating out, movies and other leisure activities are, again, less expensive than many other European Capitals.
